In the Eye of Bambi

The fourth in a publications based on a selection of works from ”la Caixa” Collection of Contemporary Art, In the Eye of Bambi by Mexican writer and visual artist Verónica Gerber Bicecci imagines a dystopian world after ecological catastrophe has reconfigured the planet. Inspired by writer Donna Haraway, climate activist Greta Thunberg and Felix Salten’s Bambi A Life in the Woods (1924), described as the first environmental novel, this cautionary tale is divided into Afterwards, Before and Now. Nature represented by grasshoppers, owls, leaves and roe deer succumbs to destruction by the creature with three hands as Verónica Gerber Bicecci attempts to capture the ‘splintered echoes of their voices’ through a Symphonic Score. Language as we know it also falls apart with new and strange word hvbrids emerging from the chaos in this new piece of writing translated by Christina MacSweeney. The selection here and in the exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery features works by Spanish and international artists Carlos Amorales, Bleda y Rosa, Carmen Calvo, Victoria Civera, Concha García and Sophie Ristelhueber.  An additional contribution by art writer Harry Thorne muses on the relationship between literature and art.
