From 6 September 2019 until 17 October 2019 De Nederlandsche Bank will be showcasing the exhibition Wonder While I Wander by Cristina Lucas.
“GUARD: You are not allowed to be naked in the museum.
ARTIST: But look around you... Everyone here is naked!
GUARD: But that is art.
ARTIST: This too is art!
GUARD: You don’t have permission. You need a permit, or I’m calling the police (as the model gets dressed).
ARTIST: Fine, then I’m leaving. I’ll come back another day with permission.”
-Cristina Lucas – Desnudos En El Museo / Nudes in the Museum (2010-…)
Since 2010, the Spanish artist Cristina Lucas has been making recordings of both female and male models that she photographs nude in museums. In these halls of famous museums such as the Prado in Madrid or the Louvre in Paris, there are iconic nudes from the history of art. With her nudes, Lucas reflects on the construction of beauty, the perception of the body in our Western world and the associated conventions. In DNB’s art gallery, the Nudes in the Museum are shown alongside a sculpture and Lucas’ video artwork Hable (2008), which was exhibited in February at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. Previously, Lucas also acted as a guest curator for our After Bretton exhibition in 2018.
Cristina Lucas (Jaén, Spain 1973) lives and works in Madrid and is a former resident of the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art from both the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the University of California. Lucas makes multimedia works in which she does not shy away from provocation, in order to encourage a critical dialogue on a wide range of social, historical and cultural issues.
The exhibition is open on business days during office hours. Due to DNB's access procedures you can visit the exhibition by appointment only and with a valid ID. Please make an appointment beforehand by telephone (+31 20 524 21 83) or email (kunstcommissie@dnb.nl).
